Scientific Facts

Simethicone is a mixture of dimethylpolysiloxane and hydrated silica. Dimethylpolysiloxane is approved by the FDA for use as a direct and indirect food additive.

Safety Information

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and permits the use of Simethicone as an ingredient in Over-the-Counter (OTC) antacid and antiflatulent products. Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) has deferred evaluation of this ingredient because the safety has been assessed by FDA. This deferral of review is according to the provisions of the CIR Procedures.

Simethicone is used in ointment bases, as an antifoaming agent and as a prosthetic aid (soft tissue).

When used as an antiflatuent agent in OTC drugs, Simethicone acts as an anti-foaming agent reducing the surface tension of gas bubbles, causing them to combine into larger bubbles in the stomach that can be passed more easily by burping. Simethicone may also be called simeticone.
