What Is It?

Aluminum Zirconium Trichlorohydrate, Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrate, Aluminum Zirconium Pentachlorohydrate and Aluminum Zirconium Octachlorohydrate occur as solids. These ingredients are used in the formulation of personal cleanliness products.

Why Is It Used?

Aluminum Zirconium Trichlorohydrate, Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrate, Aluminum Zirconium Pentachlorohydrate and Aluminum Zirconium Octachlorohydrate are ingredients that are applied to the skin to reduce the production of perspiration at the site of application, to induce a tightening or tingling sensation of the skin and to reduce or eliminate unpleasant odor.

Safety Information

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reviewed the safety of Aluminum Zirconium Chlorohydrate complexes and has approved the use of these ingredients in Over-The-Counter (OTC) antiperspirant drug products. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) has deferred evaluation of these ingredients because the safety has been assessed by FDA. This deferral of review is according to the provisions of the CIR Procedures.

Aluminum Zirconium Chlorohydrates are complexes of basic aluminum chloride. The complexes are polymeric, loosely bound to water atoms, and depending on the complex, encompass a range of aluminum to zirconium ratios (from 2 to 10 aluminum atoms for each zirconium atom), and a range of aluminum to chloride ratios (2.1 to 0.9 total metal atoms to 1 chloride atom).
