Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety

A component of Triticum Vulgare (wheat) germ oil, alpha-tocopherol or vitamin E is on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) list of substances that are Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) as nutrients. The safety of Triticum Vulgare (wheat) germ oil has been assessed by the Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety. The Expert Panel evaluated the scientific data and concluded that Triticum Vulgare (wheat) germ oil was safe as a cosmetic ingredient in the present practices of use and concentration. In 2001, as part of the scheduled re-evaluation of ingredients, the Expert Panel considered available new data on this ingredient and reaffirmed the above conclusion.

The Expert Panel reviewed the results of laboratory and clinical tests on the safety of Triticum Vulgare (wheat) germ oil and the numerous cosmetics and personal care products containing this material and confirmed the safety of Triticum Vulgare (wheat) germ oil as presently used in such products. Triticum Vulgare (wheat) germ oil was not found to be a skin or eye irritant and exposure to this ingredient did not result in dermal sensitization.

Triticum Vulgare (wheat) germ oil may be used in cosmetics and personal care products marketed in Europe according to the general provisions of the Cosmetics Regulation of EU Cosmetic Regulation.
