Polyene Ingredients

Safety Information

In 2020, the Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety assessed the safety of 26 polyene ingredients, concluding that the following are safe for use in cosmetics and personal care products in the present practices of use and concentration.

Butene/Propylene Copolymer* Isobutylene/Isoprene Copolymer*
Butylene/Ethylene Copolymer Isoprene/Pentadiene Copolymer *
Butylene/Ethylene/Propylene Copolymer Polybutene
Decene/Butene Copolymer Poly(C4-12 Olefin)*
Ethylene/Octene Copolymer* Poly(C6-14 Olefin)*
Ethylene/Propylene Copolymer Poly(C20-28 Olefin)*
Hydrogenated Poly(C6-12 Olefin) Poly(C30-45 Olefin)
Hydrogenated Poly(C6-14 Olefin) Polydecene
Hydrogenated Poly(C6-20 Olefin) Polyethylene
Hydrogenated Polybutene* Polyisobutene
Hydrogenated Polydecene Polyisoprene
Hydrogenated Polydodecene* Polypentene*
Hydrogenated Polyisobutene Polypropylene

*These 10 ingredients were not reported to be in current use. Were they to be used in the future, the expectation is that they would be used in product categories and at concentrations comparable to others in this group.

FDA

Many of the polyene ingredients have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as indirect food additives and in medical devices. Additionally, isobutylene/isoprene copolymer, polyethylene and polyisobutene are approved direct food additives for chewing gum bases.

According to the general provisions of the Cosmetics Regulation of the European Union, the polyene ingredients reviewed by the Expert Panel in 2020 are not restricted in any way from use in cosmetics and personal care products marketed in Europe.

Polyene Ingredients

What Is It?

Polyenes, such as polyethylene, are high molecular weight compounds of a class called polymers. Polymers are made from smaller repeating units called monomers.

Why Is It Used?

In cosmetics and personal care products, polyene ingredients function primarily as film formers and viscosity increasing agents-nonaqueous.
