Urea Peroxide

What is it?

Urea Peroxide, also called Carbamide Peroxide, occurs as white crystals or a crystalline powder. In cosmetics and personal care products, Urea Peroxide is used mainly in the formulation of dentifrices and oral hygiene products.

Safety Information

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) permits Urea Peroxide to be uses as an ear wax removal aid active ingredient in Over-The-Counter (OTC) ear drug products at concentrations up to 6.5%. It is also pemitted for use in oral OTC drug products as an oral wound cleanser. When used in OTC drug products, this ingredient must be called Carbamide Peroxide.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has deferred evaluation of this ingredient because the safety has been assessed by FDA. This deferral of review is according to the provisions of the CIR Procedures.

Why is it used in cosmetics and personal care products?

Urea Peroxide is used as an oral care agent to help whiten teeth. It is also used as an oxidizing agent.

Scientific facts:

Urea Peroxide, often referred to as Carbamide Peroxide, releases hydrogen peroxide. A 10% Urea Peroxide formulation is equivalent to approximately 3% hydrogen peroxide.
